Thanks for entering the Old Mutual joBerg2c. We have been blown away by our international entries. With over 150 riders from 25 countries it’s our biggest international field to date. We also have a full event of passionate South African mountain bikers who are rearing to go.
We don’t expect you all to get a tattoo of our Old Mutual joBerg2c logo like Danny Vogel from Germany, but we do think you will love this ride.
We will be doing the Dry Run between 3 to 11 March so follow us on Twitter for some banter from the route. For those of you who are old hands, we have more trails and new stuff to keep things interesting. You will also witness first hand banter from the three stooges (the three male organisers better known as the three stooges).
Rumour has it there are some really special sections being carved out of nothing but we cannot say more…
Old Mutual joBerg2c is community inspired
Remember just by riding this event you are helping us help our communities raise much needed funding from city to sea. The communities (schools, rotary clubs, farmers associations, churches, retirement homes…) are all getting going to make the race villages and water points special again.

Route changes for 2017
Day 1 and Day 9 – neutral stages
We know most of our field are riders but some folks do love to race and we are proud of our route as a racing route.
We have decided that Day 1 and Day 9 will be neutral stages this year. They will obviously be compulsory and everyone will have to ride the two neutral stages to ensure you get your finishers medal. Everyone will get the same time – a great time.
However Day 1 will be known as the Get to Know Everyone stage and Day 9, the last stage will now be the Champagne stage.
Effectively the racing for those competing for the various sections will begin at Frankfort and end at Jolivet (7 days of racing).
We will acknowledge provisional winners at Jolivet end of Day 8 and barring a withdrawal on Day 9 these will be the winners provided they finish the stage.
This should give everyone the chance to experience a bit of a Tour de France style vibe for the last day and we believe these two neutral Days will create a real ride vibe amongst our field.
This should spark some conversation among old hands but let’s do it and then chat about on the beach after a few cold ones or two.
If you are a racing snake please see our new doping rule on our website under Rules.
Avis Van Rental Ride-like-a-Pro
Avis Van Rental, our logistic support partners, ran a competition to win an entry for aspiring pro and seriously happy fun riders. Avis Van Rental and the Old Mutual joBerg2c organisers were astounded at the amount of entries they received and the quality of entries.
Congratulations to Tyrone Johns of Giba Gorge MTB park for winning a ride. Tyrone will use his entry to select a rider from the Giba Gorge academy to join him. You can read more about this here.
We were so blown away by the entries, and thought this one deserved to be shown. Watch here – Make Us Great Again Avis Van Rental to see the commitment.
The Bielie Mielie – 25 March
As usual we be helping the Reitz community (Day 2) with their annual mountain bike race – Bielie Mielie which takes place on 25 March. They use some of Day 2 and Day 3 of the Old Mutual joBerg2c route on this event and it is a great chance to practise your GPS navigation. There will be a 101km and a 55km ride.
It is only 2 hours 30 from Joburg so it is the perfect way to get some long miles in the legs and to get a taste of the Eastern Free State.

Fun training rides with the Old Mutual joBerg2c organisers and the joBerg2c playgrounds
We have to train for the Dry Run and make sure we are fit organisers. We need your respect and so we ride the full dry run. More importantly we just ride and love riding.
With this in mind we will be doing lots of fun training rides – it will be great if you are in the area to join us for some rides. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates on these informal training rides.
We will be using some of the joBerg2c playgrounds – A joBerg2c playground is a trail park or riding venue that we have a great relationship with based on their passion for great trails and their love of mountain biking.
The Garden Route Trail Park (near Knysna/Sedgefield), Van Gaalens (Hartees), Thaba Trails (South Joburg), The Red Barn (Irene – PTA) and Northern Farms (North Joburg) are great places to ride and we will be riding these venues in the build-up.
GPS navigation update
As you should all know by now the Old Mutual joBerg2c is a GPS navigation event which means we do not mark the route and you will need a GPS unit that is capable of following bread crumb trails.
Once again EasyBike (Matt) have come on board as our GPS Guru’s – not only do they offer technical advice on every conceivable unit out there, they also sell units if you need one at very decent prices.
Our website has comprehensive information on GPS and tips. For instance- Tip 1: we recommend you don’t put maps on your GPS as it is unnecessary and adds to clutter on the screen. Read more tips here.
Charging your cell phone and GPS units
Each rider will receive a very special Old Mutual joBerg2c Amped powerbank charging unit. These charging units will be able to charge your cell phones and GPS units throughout the event.
We will only charge your Amped powerbank at their charging station – we will not charge cell phones or GPS units. This system has worked wonders over the past few years.
Rider tracking with mySOS
All our riders must download the mySOS app if you have not already. This is app is incredible. It is the one stop emergency app for South Africa. If a rider falls or they witness a fall and a rider is injured they simply push the alert button and our medical team will know when the fell and where the injured rider is. More information is available on their website.
But not only is it the best emergency app on the planet it also allows family and friends to track you on your journey.
If riders have mySOS on their mobiles activated during the ride – folks at home will then be able to track the rider on the mySOS website by simply putting the rider’s mobile number in the required field.
Download the mySOS app from the Google Play Store and the Appstore now to get a feel for it.
International riders should also download the app soon but naturally not all the functionality will be relevant. The rider tracking is global so test it now.
We recommend international riders get a local sim card on arrival in South Africa if they want to be tracked as it will require a decent amount of data on route. mySOS will be at registration to assist.
Miele Single Speed
If you are one of those nicely strange and weirdish folks who want to ride the Old Mutual joBerg2c on a single speed – good news if you make the 900km journey – you will automatically go into the draw to win a R25 000 Miele washing machine – if this does not spin you out then best you hang out to dry.
